curious

i just read in a different thread, the one about testing driving a 240, that a grinding while cruising is a input bearing for the tranny. i think i may have a bad bearing, not sure though. if im cruising, and let off the gas-not all the way, but almost-there is kind of a grinding sound coming from the driveline. is that the input bearing? or what else could it be. i was thinking maybe some sort of vibration in the tranny, that somehow makes my loose exhaust rattle and sound like its grinding. this worries me now that ive heard about it. if it is the bearing, how much would it be to replace approximately, and is it something i can do myself with common tools.

Does it go away when you push in the clutch? First thing I would suspect is the throw out bearing. If that's not it, then I think you're on the right track about the input bearing.

Sounds like your throw out bearing almost for sure. Common on all high mileage cars with manual transmissions. If the noise gets worse and worse over the weeks, then I'd replace the clutch after driving the piss outta it for a few days. Might as well burn it up before you replace it. You can always just get the TOB replaced, but I think it's a waste of time.
