how long you think it'll drive for?

my 90 crx dx has a blown headgasket. I noticed that i was leaking coolant for a couple days. N' now when i drive it, it overheats in about 5-10 minutes cuz there's no coolant in there lol. Well...now i have a d16y8 swap coming in 2 weeks. I have to drive my car about one hour to get to the garage that the swap will be done at. Do you think my CRX will be able to make it if i put some coolant in there?

Re: how long you think it'll drive for?

yeah you might have to pull over and let it cool off. when my head gasket blew i drove it for a month before i did it. dont suggest it but if your shit canning the engine anyways go for it. the worst is you'll have to tow it from where you break down.

Re: how long you think it'll drive for?

Well if youre getting rid of the engine when you get there. Take out all the coolant and leave it empty or put water in there, At least it wont smoke white. Besides just like vesper said you can get it towed.

Um well your only option is going and hope for the best, or rent a flatbed truck and tow it there

I highly doubt the engine will take an hour of overheating. Mine blew up then ran like shit, bogged all the time, had no power at all.

The only thing i can suggest is turning it into a day trip. Drive for 10 minutes..... stop for 30..... drive for 10, etc, etc, etc.

I was told that if you put pepper in you oil it will seal everything off but in the process screwing you engine over.... dont try this, cause its just hear-say.

i would bring along a bunch of two liters with water so you can fill it up with something. as a side note, run your heat. that might help you squeeze a minute or two more outa each session.

Re: how long you think it'll drive for?

i dunno, but i have had a blown headgasket before and it did not overheat like it did this time. When i had coolant in there, it ran fine, then as coolant kept leaking to the point where there was no more, it didn't run for very long any more lol.

Re: how long you think it'll drive for?

I had to drive for about 45 mins to get mine to the shop and I just ran straight water and wired my fans straight so they wouldn't turn off. I limited myself to 45 mph but I made it with only 3 stops it helps to travel in the evening or at night if the shops open late. oh and run your heat.

yes.....turn the heater on all the way up.....that gives the hot air under the hood somewhere to go and keeps the temperature down a little bit.....i managed to drive my car close to 20 miles home with almost no coolant during the summer when i had the heat on

yes we realize that!! but the engine will die eventually and he will get stranded on the side of the road.

and if you run no coolant you wont get any heat out of the heater.

As long as there is water and circulation, blasting the heater will definitely stretch the amount of time until it goes tits up.
Your heater core is like an extra radiator. Use it.
