Lightbulb transmission grinding/crunching

i have a 97 grand am 2.4 auto transmission, and when its cold out(35 or below it seems) the transmission sounds real bad. when i shift from park into drive or from park into reverse it just crunches or grindes it almost sounds like. this happens only when its cold out. does anyone else experience this?
