cylinder honing

does anyone know if i have to hone the cylinders before i put the pistons back in with the new rings?

i heard a bottle brush hone is the easiest to use, any tips on technique so i dont f**k up the engine??
this is my first rebuild so any help would be appreciated...

When your honing your cylinder make sure you move the brush up and down evenly in the cylinder using the press machine so that you get a good cross hatch pattern. It will take a while but its all good.

i just took my block to the machine shop and they honed it for $8 per cylinder

nah you can buy a honing drill bit. it will plug right into a drill. of course i would never do this, but if you want make sure you do not stay in one place too long.

I would deff take it to a machine shop. If you don't do it even your rings aren't going to seal right. Plus if you plan on keeping the engine awhile I would spend the few extra bucks and have it done right.
