carb problems?

Hi, i just got an 83 cutlass supreme through a hand me down and am in the works of fixing it up. The engine isnt in that great of shape, but i think a simple carb adjustment (or new carb) could solve the problem. The symptoms are:
at start, very low idle, sometimes the car shuts off. After it gets a little warm, then it will start to idle really high until i punch the gas real quick to get the rpm's back down. after about 4-5 minutes of warm up I'll start to move, but i can only barely touch the gas, otherwise the car will stall. once i have the car moving about 10 minutes, it doesnt wanna shut off unless i mash the gas, and when i do that it lags and sounds like it wants to die and sometimes i'll have to get off the gas, or sometimes it'll kick into a lower gear to pick up the pace. Any ideas on the problem? I was also thinking it might be a vacuum line, but im not sure which lines i would check for that problem...im new to the domestic cars but want to learn. Its a V-6, and it only has about 85,000 miles on it. Thanks for any future answers!

Carb

You should try hooking up the computer to the carb. I use to have the same problem and I plugged the computer control into the carb and it ran smooth. Every now and then it will run rough, unhook the computer and plug it back up. Everything will be fine. That's if the car has a computer module.

Re: carb problems?

1. It might be time to re-build the carb and just get a re-build kit for your carb.

2. Ignition module might be failing.

3. Have you done a maintenance replacement on this vehicle? Like spark plugs, spark plug wires, distributor cap, distributor rotor, ignition coil, etc.

4. You can try squirting carb cleaner around the intake gaskets or around the carb to see if you have vacuum leak. The IDLE will change greatly if there is a vacuum leak and carb cleaner is squirted into it and you just found where the vacuum leak is.

5. Check the PVC valve and its vacuum hose. The EGR vavle and its hose and another source of problem if it is not working right. Try disconnecting the EGR vacuum hose and plug it up on both sides (temporarily) and see if the problem goes away. It could be a stuck open EGR valve.

6. CTS (Coolant Temperature Sensor) if that is bad and not generating signal or it is telling the computer that it is too cold or too hot when realy it is not, then it will throw off the computer and you will have a drivability problem.
