Unhappy 89 Ford Probe Gt (turbo Problems)

What Would Cause The Turbo To Not Work Proper ?

I Pulled The Hose Off And The Turbo Seems To Spin Fine . I Also Replaced The Control Solenoid Vavle . When Driving The Car The Turbo Kicks In For A Second Or Two Then Starts To Miss
(crap Out) The Boost Gage Reads No Boost .any Ideals ?

Re: 89 Ford Probe Gt (turbo Problems)

sounds like something other than your turbo. fuel pump not delivering proper, vaf sensor, any codes?, coil, bad coil wire, spark plugs, clogged cat...and so on. If turbo wasnt working(not spinning up) the car would run relatively fine, just lack of power. like you said if you can spin the compressor wheel by hand and stay spinning with little resistance then it is fine unless you have a crack in the manifold which you would definitely hear. Usually turbo's go out slowly(unless you run with no oil pressure) by the seals and bearing but the car just smokes at lot with a small loss of power until the compressor and turbine start to dig into the housing.....iow...do a complete tune-up/check first.

With turbos, When travelling at high speed for a long time, then you pull over and turn it off (to get gas or take a leak) you can blow the turbo with out letting it cool down first, i dont know the exact part that goes but i believe it just doesn't let one side spin proper. You best bet is to make sure the both sides are working properly.

There can be any number of problems that cause this, but it sounds like you are experiencing one of two very specific problems. One is the infamous boost leak. If you have one, then you will either achieve little or no boost and it will seems as if the car is missing due to the fact that unmetered air is being allowed into the system. The other is an overboost condition, but it sounds more like the first. Start by checking your throttle body boot (tb boot). It is the piece of rubber that comes off the throttle body, bends at a 90 degree angle and then attaches to the IC piping. Pull it off and inspect it for cracks. If it is leaking, it will cause the problems you are talking about.
