not starting after 5 min running

start car runs good all power idile s great will run all day shut it off and sounds like a dead battery its a 1970 olds 350 rocket its in a 1983 olds cutlass calas can any one help me

It almost sounds like the starter might be getting too hot, is the exaust runnint close to the solenoid?
