1988 Jeep Cherokee Pioneer 4WD light on dash display

During our recent snow storm here in jersey. I engaged the four wheel drive mode in my girlfriends Jeep cherokee, 1988 pioneer. I had some trouble getting the shifter to the four wheel drive gear i needed. I went all the way to the four wheel low gear,with some force. And after that i put it back to four wheel high. Four wheel drive worked very good. now after the ground was dry. i put the gear back to 2 Wheel drive. But the part time light will not go out. i tried to go back and forth in and out of 4 wheel and back to 2 wheel but to my dismay it still will not go out. the truck is back at 2 wheel drive, but the part time light is still on.
