Question Cheap power for a lowly STD?

So I've been thinking about what I might to do get some cheap power in my wimpy 91 std hatch. From what I've read, the DPFI->MPFI may be a reasonably cheap swap that should give it some power. (~20HP?)

Another option would be a cold air intake, though I dont know how much to expect from that or how much a cheap one costs.

A third that I'm curious about is the exhaust. Is there an OEM honda exhaust manifold that's noticeably better than the one on there now(say one from a different engine that might fit)? I can't justify spending what it would cost for some nice headers and an exhaust system, but I was wondering whether there's a cheaper route to get better than stock. If i could upgrade that cheap and then maybe pay a little for a decent exhaust system that might work. Oh, and it has to pass CA smog unfortunately

Just looking for a little extra juice without spending a lot of cash (or sacrificing reliability)

MPFI would be good but if you buy one i'll be pissed cause i've been trying to get one for over year now! Best other then that is get a short ram intake. i spend 70 for one it was worth it.

Re: Cheap power for a lowly STD?

Is the DX ecu an upgrade? I am doing a $100 project std, and the first $75 is already aportioned to bondoglass and steel plates.

Re: Cheap power for a lowly STD?

get a dx ecu and throttle body for cheap power....CAI or a short ram intake really won't do anything for u w/o a new exhaust system.....and u'll still manage to get only about 10 hp....yeah consider doing a mpfi swap though...

What's he looking at gaining with a stock STD engine (D15B1), with say an Si/DX MPFI? In a 'ball park' figure...could that boost him 10-20hp?

Then perhaps if he added on a true cold air intake...one step further...what would that further advance him?

Very curious to hear the response...

Re: Cheap power for a lowly STD?

if he gets a SI mpfi and gets 20hp....i think the CAI will add about another 3-4hp IMO

The Si mpfi will give him 20hp on the stock engine!?

The reason I ask is because I think I'm putting my good stock STD engine in my Si that has a dying D15B2 in it (the stock D16a6 was killed by the former owner)...because I really can't afford another engine...my Si has the MPFI in it already thus if I drop in the D15B1 from my smashed Si you are saying that I should improve on the engine by 20HP approx.?

That right?

Jason

Re: Cheap power for a lowly STD?

that's about what i understand from other threads, but keep in mind the STD engine only has 70HP to start with, so 20HP would only be getting it about up to par with the DX engine I think.

Re: Cheap power for a lowly STD?

I think the std will be closer to 100hp w/ MPFI than to 90hp. They aren't that far off from a B2 engine.
