Question Piston Rings?? HELP!!!

Ok, I have a 90 CRX DX 1.5L, I am getting smoke out the tail pipe while I drive, it seems to be all the time, and it is worse when I step on the gas hard. I check my oil all the time, and I havent seen a trace of water, and I check the water and I havent seen a trace of oil, I am ruling out a head gasket, and I dont personally think it is the valve guides, but hey I dont know too much about these cars yet, so any help you can give me... PLEASE!! Also has anyone ever done the rings on a d15? how big of a job is it?

What color is the smoke? Are you losing oil?

Try doing a compression check because you're burning more oil than you should. I know it's okay to burn about 3/4 of oil, but one or more of your rings could be fudged. You can buy compression guages at almost any auto store for like $10. If you need help on actually doing it, let me know after you buy one. It's just a little gauge with a hose coming off it.

Re: Piston Rings?? HELP!!!

thanks man. ill go pick one up tomorrow. i just bought this lude 2 months ago and its starting to piss me off really bad...i think ive got a vacuum leak/maf sensor /o2 sensor problem, my brakes pull to the left slightly(suspension i think) and this on top of all of that, new rings would put me over the top. this car was perfect when i bought it, and i havent been killing it or anything, but with all of this shit going wrong im about to get pissed/ i thought this would be a step above the 95 civic but i guess not.

i really want to start modding this car up but i REFUSE to start bolting shit onto a poorly running car. money is a big problem right now with x-mas coming up so im really pretty worried about this stuff. anyway thanks a bunch for your help.

Re: Re: Piston Rings?? HELP!!!

no problem. Shoot me a pm or something when you get it, or post here I guess. Unlike other bs'ers I've done compression tests and know what I'm talking about.

Re: Piston Rings?? HELP!!!

The only problem I have with this is that dark grey / black smoke is a rich running motor. Oil burning is a bluish white smoke. Also you ask how big of a job the rings are on a D15, well I can tell you first hand it is involved. But that is the same with any motor you have to remove the head etc. You need to replace the rod bearings and while you are at it replace the main bearings also. You will need a new head gasket, vavle cover gasket, head bolts, oil pan gasket, bearings, rings, and a ring compressor. Those are the basic things you will need. Also get a tube of HONDA BOND you will be glad you did. If you are really serious about this than I don't mind giving some directions but if you have never done this on any motor then take it to a shop.
