I Have Soooo Had It!!!!!

I have a 94' regal with a 3.8. The problem I am having is this. The car dies sporadically when coming to a stop. It seems to have something to do with a shifting problem. The shifting problem is this. When cruising at highway speeds, sometimes it shifts fine into OD, other times it stays in third gear with NO braking effect on the engine. If I shift from D to 3rd, the RPM's will rise, and the braking effect on the engine is restored, if I shift back into D, the RPM's stay the same until I let go of the gas, then the RPM's drop to 1000. I am getting a salad of codes and don't beleive all that can be wrong with the car. I just replaced the Tranny solenoid and checked the TPS with a new one. The TPS is fine. Please help if you can

Re: I Have Soooo Had It!!!!!

This salad of codes will assist me in the troubleshooting of the problem. Please gice the code number and a brief description of the related explanation of the code. It might also be helpful to delete all of the codes and go for a short drive, allowing the SES light to liiuminate, giving a shorter list of the codes set. I can help with this but bear in mind that any set codes in the computer will directly affect engine and trans performance, and that these problems will not go away until the cause is located and correctly repaired. codes

I lost the list, here's what I can remember. I got codes for the Throttle position sensor (I checked it, it's fine), the Tranny solenoid (I replaced it, same problems), NO 18X ignition pulse, EGR valve pintle position error, misfire, I just replaced all plugs, tranny filter, oil, filter, tranny fluid, suspension components, cap, rotor, . And NO, This did not start happening after I did the work. It has donr it for a while. It started out with just the Tranny not going into overdrive correctly for about 50,000 miles. Now it stalls when ever you slow down to a stop or a turn. It stalls between once every 2 days and 20 times in one day.

Re: codes

How did you check the TP sensor? Also how did you change the cap and rotor since your engine doesn't have them? What trans solenoid did you change!

I was going through a list of receipts last night and was very tired. On that receipt I saw cap and rotor along with other stuff I bought for the Buick, I wasn't thinking straight. I checked the resistance on the old TPS compared to a new one and the readings were the same at all areas of openness. I replaced the tranny solenoid on the front of the tranny that has a vacuum line running to it and one bracket holding it in place. It is spring loaded.

I think the place to start here is the NO 18X code. If the ECM is getting no 18X signals, or worse, intermittent signals, EVERYTHING else is sympathetic. Sympathetic means that the ECM is basing all of its diagnostics on the engine speed, TPS readings, transmission control, on comparisons between the signals and software. If one is missing, incorrect or intermittent, the rest result from the loss of the one. The 18X signals allow the ECM to maks quicker decisions regarding rpm changes, and timing advance calculations. It is a faster signal than either the crank or cam signals, and without it, the computer can only guess what to do next. Ray

Do you know what provides the 18x ignition pulse signal or what part should be replaced?

forgot to tell you something

Sometimes when the car stays in third, if I stomp on the gas and release it real quick it will shift into overdrive. I usually hit it about 10 times or so in rapid succession to get it to shift
