1991 1.9 Tranny

Ok, so about a month ago I was driving along like normal, yield for a left turn at a light and when I make the turn, my car sounds like it came out of gear. I look down and it's still in drive. I heard a slight sound when this happened. Can't quite discribe the sound because it was rush hour and I was next to the highway. The car holds itself in park but does not move in Low, Drive, Overdrive or Reverse. It does still raise the engine RPM to compensate for being in gear though. I'm trying to figure this out and am going to have a mechanic look at it, I just want opinions of what I might be able to check out.

Also, if it's the transmission/transaxle I'm considering automatic to manual swap. Would this be too hard and would I be able to keep cruise control.
