Temperature Gauge

Today my temp gauge started moving erratically from from cold to hot. I think there is a gauge problem because the gauge was moving so fast I don't think it was taking any readings. Does anyone have any ideas what this could be? I had my oil changed an hour or so prior to me noticing the gauge problem.
