84 Cutlass Starting Problem
I have a 84 2 door Cutlass Supreme with a Buick 3.8L engine. When I turn the engine off and try to start it later, the voltage guage shows 8 volts and the engine barely turns over. I can wait anywhere from 10 minutes to several hours and then it will crank. It doesn't do this all the time and sometimes it does this the first time I try to crank it in the morning. This leads me to believe it's not a heat problem. I have been unable to find any shorts or possible shorts (frayed wires) up to this point. Any advice on where to start looking? Also, since I found this forum (thankful for that), I have a question. My Cutlass has an automatic on the floor. Most of the pictures I am seeing show the shifter on the column. Was this an option or do I have something besides a 2 dr notchback coupe? Thanks

First thing I would look at is the battery..have it load tested.
Sometimes batteries can develop internal problems that can cause the problems you are descibing. Many Cutlass's came with floor shifters

I would check the battery terminals. After attempting to crank the engine, check the terminals. The hot one needs attention. If all is well there, I have seen alternators fail, causing the engine to be very difficult to turn. The check here is to disconnect the serpentine belt and try again. You might have a friend try cranking the engine and watch the alternator. If it tries to turn the opposite direction from the engine, it is likely the culprit. You may also have issues with the starter, in which case, both battery terminals will be the same temp and hot. Be careful when checking this. The defective terminal could be seriously hot... Ray
