A Plan to Overhaul Federal Fuel Economy Regulations

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has developed a preliminary plan for revising the nation’s fuel economy regulations. The plan, known as an Advance Notice of Proposed Rulemaking (ANPRM) is currently under review by the White House Office of Management and Budget. The hot rumor is that the new proposal will scrap the regulatory distinction between passenger cars and light trucks in favor of a system based on vehicle weight – an idea potentially detrimental to the interests of larger pickup trucks, SUVs and minivans. Check back here regularly for the latest information on this important issue.
