Replacing water pump
Hi, I was wondering if anyone has had any experience replacing the water pump in a '93 Concorde with a 3.5L engine. Or if anyone would have any idea where I could go online to get a diagram of the engine showing it's location and possibly the instructions for replacing one. The shop tells me it's going to cost almost $1000 and sorry but at this time of year I don't have that much extra laying around, so I was going to attempt it myself. Any help would be greatly, greatly appreciated.

Re: Replacing water pump
replacing a water pump on a chrysler 3.5 liter V6 is not hard to do but there's one big thing, you have to remove the timing belt just to get to it. If you have never done timing belts, I suggest that you not tackle it, because if you do not properly line up the crankshaft and camshafts, it won't start or worse yet, you could run into piston to valve contact. But if you are willing to do it, go to a local auto part store and look at the service manual for Chrysler LH body style cars between 93-97.

Thanks very much for your help. I did go and look at a Chilton book for changing the water pump, but all it said about the timing belt was to make sure it was set TDC, which a friend told me means Top Dead Centre. As for doing it myself, right now I don't really have a choice. Can anyone tell me how I can easily tell if everything is set correctly as far as the timing belt goes??
Once again...any help at all will be greatly appreciated. And have a great New Years..... |

Re: Replacing water pump
There are a couple of ways to tell if the engine is at TDC but in the case of replacing a water pump. When you have pulled off the timing belt covers, there will be white paint marks already marked on the camshaft sprockets and crankshaft sprockets. Make sure those marks line up on the notch marks on the cylinder head for the camshaft sprockets and on the face of the oil pump for the crankshaft sprocket. Once you have all that lined up, you can proceed on with taking off the belt. It's always a good idea to put a new belt on when you do.
