1982 Mazda 323 carb

Hi all,

I recently bought my girlfriend an '82 mazda 323, bog standard.
It seems to be using more fuel than a 1.5L should and also tends to bog down at part throttle - full throttle is ok.

I have replaced plugs, air and fuel filter and advanced the timing slightly.
The car starts easily and idles happily.

It has a single Hitachi carb which i know nothing about (i'm an SU person).

Can some one explain to me how these carbs work so i can have a look and try and diagnose what's going on?

Thanks,
speedracer

Hi!

With regards to your girlfriend's car. I own a modified version with twin carbs. The car should make between 28 and 36 Mpg, depending very much on the way driven, as it has a double barrel carb. Hence first you are using the primary and then the secondary one. If it is not working well on low revs, I suggest, you clean the carb properly, first by using a good additive and then if needed taking out the jets. These cars don't like being driven slow, as they build up carbon, since the carbs are designed for a higher flow of fuel.

I hope you find this useful, if not, I'll be more than happy to help further.

Best Regards,

kenneth
