Steering squeals

Whenever I turn my steering wheel, it makes a loud screeching noise. Does anyone know what it is? The noise occurs whenever i turn the wheel while standing in the driveway or moving. The car is a 1998 eclipse gs.

Its most likely coming from the rack, check the PS resivoir and see if you can see any shiny metallic flakes in it.

loose accesory drive belt. Pop the hood and look at the belt that powers your a/c and power steering. I had the same problem and had to replace the belt. Look at where the belt loops over your top pulley and goes down over your belt tensioner (small silver pulley). Tighten the bolt on your tensioner until you think that it is tight enough. I believe you need a 14mm wrench to tighten it.

Maybe this pic will help. You may need to loosen up that top nut just a bit in order to tighten the other bolt

Re: Steering squeals

If the above fails you might just need to dress the belt to stop the noise. You can use ivory soap or belt dressing. My power steering belt would chirp after it was tight and anytime i washed down the engine bay and got alittle water on the belt

no problem.... You might want to get it replaced cause a loose belts gets worn really easily and it will eventually snap. Onlly like 11 bucks at autozone

That's pretty weird because I have the same problem and I just had the belt replaced. I am going to try and tighten the fasteners and dress the belt like you guys said.

I tightened those bolts and it works perfectly now. A little off topic does anybody want to join my "I hate ja rule and he should retire" fan club?
He's gay.
