I had very simular symptoms on my 89 last week. it turned out just to be a vacuum hose (it went to the manifold pressure sensor) that my son accidentaly removed while changing the sensor for the temp guage. plugged it back in and the jeep ran fine.

if you have a 'schucks' auto parts near you they will loan you a scanner. I'd get one, plug it in, and make sure all of your sensors are sending out reasonable readings. it can save you some searching. I had a scanner here and it showed a bad reading on the manifold pressure, I checked the sensor and found the disconected hose. you couldn't see it without really looking for it and I'd have searched for hours without the scanner to guide me.

the hose that I had fall off was on the manifold presssure sensor. the sensor is on the firewall above and to the drivers-side of the engine. the hose comes in from the bottom.
