Burning oil and some swap questions

The first problem is that my car is burning oil now, about .5 to 1 quart 350-700 miles. It is a 91 D15b1 with 14000 miles. I have searched this forum and found that it is probably the piston rings, valve seals, or something else which I forget. When I pull my spark plugs they are all normal except #4 which has oil all over it. Also my oil filter is kind of old, do these ever leak? My real question is how much could this cost to get fixed depending on the problem?
I figure if it is going to cost a lot I should just do a swap.
I got a quote for a D16Z6 with an Si transmission for about $1300 installed.
Is this a good deal?
I was also wondering if anybody knows if once they perform the swap do they keep your old engine and parts?

Why not do the swap yourself. It will save you some cash.

Re: Burning oil and some swap questions

from price quotes i have heard around the net that is about avg.

if you have some tools...it really is pretty easy to do. the z6 bolts right into place like your d15

some places will keep your stuff if you don't ask for it back...some places will keep it as a core charge. really, you need to ask what they do. i suggest just telling them you expect your stuff back

Well I want to do the swap myself but this is my only car/ daily driver so I need it running and not down to long.
About how many hours would this take for me to install?
I might run into some small problems, but I have done the mpfi swap and that wasnt too bad.
Isnt the obd0 to obd1 or whatever it is hard to do though?

And I emailed the swap place and they emialed me right back, and then I had some more questions for them and they never emailed me back.

And the other reason I wanted to bring it to a shop is i figured they inspected the engines before they put them in and gave some kind of a warranty when they put them in, is this true?

this first time we ever did the "swap" was when we stuck my y8 in. we figured it would take 2 days. on day 1 the a6 was pulled, a new clutch installed, and the tranny bolted to the y8. mission complete. day 2 we planned to drop it in and fire. it would have fired but, upon firing we found the rotor on the dizzy to be busted. i live in a 1 horse town where you can't get a cap and rotor on a sunday . being the first time we decided to try the a6 dizzy. didn't work. ended that day frustrated. that evening we figured out we were semi on the right path. the a6 dizzy would work but only with the other obd0 parts. it would run with no vtec but i didn't care, it being my daily driver i just wanted it to fire. the next morning we swapped the intake mani and put the pm6 ecu back in and it fired right up.

with all that said...

being your first time, you should be able to pull engine, install clutch (if you get one), and bolt tranny & engine together on day 1. day 2 you just need to install...and you'll have all day to take your time. since you are doing a z6 and said your car is MPFI converted it should make the swap a lot easier.

if you go through a shop they should give you a warrenty that it runs for xxx amount of days and they will fix any problems due to their error. but they don't exactly cover the engine. a lot of the engine places you can go through will give you a start up warrenty and they test the engines before they sell them. just make sure you go thru a reputable place like nippon-motors.com or hmotorsonline.com

as for converting from odb0 to obd1, you can get a conversion harness made for around $150. you plug 1 side into your stock harness and the other side to the p28 ecu (92-95 si/ex). then you extend 8 wires and your done. it's been awhile since i've had the instructions in my hands. i know 4 wires go to the 02 sensor, 1 for check engine light, 1 to knock sensor, and i to vtec....i think. maybe someone who has used one recently can correct me if i'm wrong?!?!?

holy shyt! sorry for the novel of info. thought maybe you (or if anybody does a search) could learn from our 1st "swap" experience

Have/do a cylinder leakage test. That will tell you where its getting through and you can make a decision from there.

Btw, assuming that its either rings, or valve seals, it will be a whole lot cheaper to fix than getting a swap. Plus, you could be getting a swap that needs the same attention as your current motor.

Thanks for that "novel" it helped out a lot.
If I do decide to try it myself I will definetly search around.
Jeff, one reason I wanted to go to a shop is so I didnt end up with a motor that is in the same conditoin of mine.
But I mean, I definetly would rather have a swap done than fix up my D15...
I'm not really sure what I am going to do at this point, I will look into doing or having somebody do a cylinder leakage test.

Re: Burning oil and some swap questions

If you do decide to get a swap, then you can have them do a leakage test on the new motor before they install it just to be sure.

Btw, I competely understand about wanting to go ahead and upgrade to a better motor than repairing your d15.

Re: Burning oil and some swap questions

it depends on if you want to replace everything. this is what mine cost:

d16y8 $500
p28 ecu $150
wiring conversion harness $150
Center Fource Stage 2 clutch $225

a bunch of that stuff you have listed up there is not required....really at all.
