Crash Test....CRX or Hatch?
Hi,
Right now I have a 4 door civic LX and Im saving up to buy either a CRX or hatch. They are smaller and I am told the CRX is a little lighter and shorter then the hatch. Which car would be the safest in a crash or accident? Thanks

actually i think they would do about the same in a crash test, if not, i would have to go with the hatch being the safest

I once heard this, and I will pass it on. "Basically, if you get into an accident [in a CRX] with a dog at ANY speed....the dog wins" - Does that answer your question. I have seen some pretty mangled CRX's, which the driver walked away from the accidents, but the CRX was no more. I have not heard many discussions about a hatch's safety, but I'd assume it's safer than the CRX.

i know 2 people who were mangled when the girl ran a yield and got smoked by a speeding sunfire.
yet i still bought a crx.. level with ya, 88-91 hatch or crx itsn't gunna stand up to well in an accident, thats a pretty well known fact, if you want personal safety, upgrade, roll cage, that kinda thing. if your afraid of death, take the bus. |

Actually, you'd be surprised how well 4g's hold up in a collision. Many, many years ago we got rearended by a 4g sedan. We were in a '79 full-size Dodge van, sitting at a stoplight & it was raining. All of a sudden I hear tires skidding & next thing I know we got hit.
This lady driving a 4g sedan locked up her brakes & still hit us doing about 35. She hit us so hard that the van's drivers seat pedestal was bent backwards - which caused my dad to release the brake (as he was being thrown back) - which then caused us to roll into a truck in front of us that had the tailgate down. The tailgate went through our grill... The Civic went under our bumper at an angle & completely crushed the entire left side of her engine compartment. She got out without a scratch. |

There was a kid in my highschool who was driving drunk one night and ran into a phone pole at over 60 mph in a CRX....the paramedics found one of the rear struts buried in the back of his head....not the safest of cars but im sure anything is a death trap if your a dumbass....be smart and either will serve you well

I've read several stories on the CRX Resource about some really bad crashes, getting rear ended at 80mph, the car hitting a curb and rolling several times, and some others. All of which the drivers and passengers came out alive with fairly little injury. Just like every Honda, they're designed to be totalled before you get hurt.http://www.intellichoice.com/reports..._nmb/100008574

Just because a car is bigger doesn't mean it's safer.
Volvo's are supposed to be the safest car if you're in an accident. When they get hit, they crumple up like a beer can. That crumpling absorbs some of the force of the wreck. You might think driving a late 1960s beast (Like an Oldsmobile Delta 88) would be safer...but you'd be wrong. Big heavy cars with big heavy metal don't crumple. Instead, they transmit that force to the squishy meatsacks inside...killing them. The car looks fine after the wreck, but the occupants turn to jello. The biggest factor in safety is that you don't want to be thrown from the vehicle or have it crush you. Use the seatbelt to keep you inside, and you're chances will be better. Also, if you really want to do a top speed run...wear a fuckin' helmet. Flunky |

there are 3 impacts that occur when you get in an accident.
1. The car your in, and the opposing object or vehicle. 2. Your body to your car, say your face hits the window. 3. Your organs to the inside of your body. Statistics say that of the three impacts, number 3 is the most likely cause of death. so not so much the car your in, its how fast your moving, if you got a belt on, etc.

Some of the scary things i hear, are straight up, from friends of mine; as in .. "i believe in not wearing a seatbelt.".. I ask them why, and its because of other stories they have heard, where, if the person who died was NOT wearing the seatbelt, they would have survived...
now my only problem to this is.. . yah the stories they hear are when there are side swipes, and T-bones... Hit a pole doing 90 mph without your seatbelt and see what happens. And the saddest part of all, all of my friends are straight-line (1/4 mile) racers.... meaning the accident they are going to become part of, isn't going to be a T-bone, its going to be HITTING something..... grrr idiots.

Alright thanks alot guys for ur input.
You have made me feel alot better about buying a hatch now. And I may buy one in the near future when I finish saving up. I always wear my seatbelt at all times so thats what i will continue to do. Thanks alot guys.

I'm not trying to be negative but i've always thought of my civic to be a death trap.. If I ever got into an accident ( big accident), seat belt or no seat belt i don't think there is any chance that i would survive. Im sure that people have tho. Civics are just so small. there is really nothing prevent an on comming car or wall/tree ect from trying to get upclose and personal with you. :22yikes: Instead of boucing off a wall like a overpriced minivan im sure a civic/crx would stop and crush just like a empty beer can on john belushi's head.
