How do I convert 4x2 to 4x4 ?

I have a 1990 GMC Suburban with a 5.7 liter. It is a 4x2. I would like to know how to convert it to a 4x4. I know it would probally be more economical to just buy a 4x4, but I know this vehicle and it is in excellent shape and would hate to get rid of it. Please let me know if you know how to or know of a site that describes how to do it. Thanks !!

never done it, but ill make a good educated guess for you. think of ALL the work it will take to make it a 4x4. you will need different drive shafts, maybe some type of adapter for the tranny, a transfer case. you will need tons of front end parts, like cv joints, and many more things. not to mention youll need to find some interior parts so it looks right when you butch the floor of the truck up in order to put the shift lever in. from a personal standpoint, id say dont do it. i think youll be dumping way to much money into it. lemme know what you actually do with it, im curious as to how much itll cost you if you go through with it.

That is the understatement of the year. You are probably looking at at least 10,000 in parts - not to mention the intense amount of labor. Also, I don't know about your state, but there could be some serious legal issues involved. The VIN number would no longer match the actual vehicle, meaning your title could be in jeapordy unless you have the whole thing sanctified by some state agency..... I'm sure it can be done, but it would be a serious pain in the A.
