my civic does the same thing. i just open the windows because my car boggs down even at a stoplight when it is on. my dads rsx doesn't have that problem though. i guess just get a bigger engine cuz the EG civic engine on a dx or ex is so weak.

A/C uses up a lot of power, that's why you get the sluggish response. Happens to my car too.

A/C is driven off of a belt which turns the compressor as soon as you turn your A/C on your engine has to work a lil bit harder to turn that belt.

yup that happens in our civic and the altima, they lose about 10 to 20% power, windows down with tunes up is the best

Actually its been proven you get about 3mpg more with ac, because of less wind resistance with windows closed. ^_^

Where did you hear that? I always thought it was the other way around. The extra effort needed to power the A/C would decrease mileage, IMO.

I have heard that AC on helps fuel economy also, but only at cruising/highway speeds. Not in city driving. Wind resistance and all... makes sense, But i have never actually tried it myself.

my car gets better mileage when i keep the windows closed, sunroof up on the first notch and the vents just blowing air through... i don't like using air even when it is hot. call me weird but i like windows/sunroof open and no air

A/C being on doesn't help your gas mileage at all. It actually decresases it quite a bit. Driving with all of your windows up and sunroof closed is what helps keep your mpg up, due to the decrease in air resistance. I'm in the same boat as you Miata about 98% of the time. The only times i put my air on is when it's in the 90's and the hunidity is off the charts. Times like that, having my windows down and hot air blowing in my face just doesn't feel good. I just wish Honda made more powerful a/c. My previous car was a '92 Camry, and the a/c was verrrrry cold, and was very strong. My Civic is cool, and blows at a good clip, but no where near what my Camry could do.
