The haynes manual says to remove the steering knuckle, balljoint, etc then remove it all as one unit, however, you still have to pull the lug plate off, and it seems hard to believe that there should be that much work involved in replacing the discs. Any suggestions?

I ended up figuring out how to do this. Here goes: Number one, I wouldn't reccommend a beginner do this, but here is how it is done. To get the Lug or Hub plate off, a standard pull will not work for the above reasons. If you have a Haynes manual, you do not need to remove the steering knuckle, balljoint, or tie rod end. You need a slide hammer, or an axel puller. It is a long shaft with a weight on one end and a plate that attaches to the hub plate on the other. Essentially you slam the weight accross the shaft and it will hit the end. Keep doing this until the piece comes off. If you've seen a dent puller, it is the same thing. It just uses the inertia of the weight to pull the piece off. That is the easy explanation. In reallity, it took me one hour to get the right side off, because it was ceased up. Furthermore, I had to use a prybar to incrementally pry the plate off in the process. Took only half an hour to do the other side. This will expose the wheel bearings, so examine and replace or repack them with good bearing grease while you're at it. Trust me, you won't ever want to do this again. My arms and hands are still throbbing after that one, and its been 4 days since!
I would reccommend getting a local mechanic/service person to do this for you if it has to be done. At say $50cdn per hour, that's only $75cdn plus tax for the work. It's worth it.
Good Luck!
