Can someon explain what this is and how it helps an engine?

The cold air intake is a simple device to accomplish a simple task. The positioning of factory air filters is generally in a less than desirable spot in the engine bay. The reason the factory placement is generally less than desirable is because they are usually placed in such a position that it is succeptable to picking up warm or hot air from the engine bay. When stuff gets hot, it expands, and becomes less dense. Therefor hot air is less dense than cold air, meaning there are less molecules in a given space than if it were cold. The oxygen molecules present in air are neccessary in order for the chemical reaction, that is combustion, to take place. It is now evident that the more oxygen molecules that one has, the more gasoline one may burn; this is because the molecules of gasoline now have more oxygen to react with. The cold air intake is simply a pipe that picks up air from an area where the air is colder, and therefor more dense. With this dense air, your engine is supplied with more oxygen molecules, and is able to burn more gasoline, creating more power. A secondary benefit of CAI's is the fact that they generally come with a high flow, low resistance air filter, allowing even more air to be sucked into the cylinders, even more easily.

The basic premise behind them is, the more gasoline one is able to burn, the more power one will create. And in order to burn gasoline one needs more oxygen, so in order to get more oxygen, one wants denser air. So they find a place where the air is colder and use the CAI to route it to the engine. The CAI its self is nothing special, simply a pipe with an air filter on the end.

so baisicly you get more horses when you use it?? Does it cause the engines life to be shorter?would you put one in your car?

In theory you should get more horsepower, how much depends greatly on a number of factors. You won't get much more power though, so don't be upset if you don't notice a difference. Engine life will not be adversely effected. Not only would I use one, I already have one.
