gettin ls/vtec got some q's

got a 94 integ ls, called a shop and they said they could do the ls/vtec for 1600, includes change of oil lines, ecu, tunning, everything need out the door. i wanna do some more engine work while the head is off so i save money on labor but i'm kinda on a budget. i'm thinkin of some cams, but they seem too costly, my friend said ctr cams are the best bang for the buck. what you guys think.

Wither either 9.5:1 (B16/ITR head) or 9.7:1 (GSR head) compression, cams wouldn't really show much power. You'd be better off spending the money for full exhaust, or some port work. If you want to run cams and make some power, you need to run more compression. You can pick up CTR Pistons for pretty cheap, those combined with some CTR cams or some other mild cams would give you a fair bit of power.
