Do you guys reccomend buyint a 944?

Hey, i went to go see an excellent 1984 944 (burgandy)
the guy selling it only drove it in the summer, when it wasnt raining, and has kept good care of it, it looks great, and sounds good, i havent test driven it, he said to come back in a few days after they tar his street, so i can drive it without the body gettting chipped by gravel
its only got 24,000 miles on it he wants $5500 for it , the NADA blu book sez $5122 for a "high retail" 944, and this thing is about as close to perfect as i could imagine seeing, but id like to get him down a few hundred, ya know?

is there anything to look for specifically in a 944 that might be cause of concern?
seems ok to me, i only want a summer driving car until im done with college, and this would be pretty fun, no?

the only problem i see is the insurance costs, seeing as im 18...
but otherwise, im pretty set on getting it, unless someone has a good reason not to get it

Do yourself a favor and go to http://www.connact.com/~kgross/FAQ/944faq05.html

Great info on the 944 line and what to watch for. I bought my S2 in April and found out that there is a lot of junk out there and what questions to ask. So far, a great car. I have complete maint records since it was purchased.

The rule of thumb is, if a Porsche has been well maintained, it will be reliable, and fairly inexspensive to run. Of course, if it hasn't, it'll be a nightmare of expensive parts and labour.

If it's got that low mileage and was babied, then it'll be no problem. $5500 is a tad high for an early 944, but that thing sounds mint from your description.

If I had $5500 burning a hole in my pocket, I can't think of a better way to spend it.

thanks, I will take a closeer look when i go test drive it today

though i dont forsee many problems in a car with only 24,000 miles on it, but its still good to check it thouroughly

yeah, I've been looking for a car to upgrade from, and well, nothing has been quite right, and im tired of driving THIS:

so i'm just saying "screw it, ill get me a Porsche"

Well, it dont matter what you guys think now, i bought it, and its fantastic!
German version 1984 944 with 24,600 miles on it
For $5100, after all the fuilds were changed, IM test done, title changed, etc (by the owner, he is such a nice guy!) I need to get the front tires balanced, but thats not a big priority

careful!!!

you said that you are having the front end balanced. look carefully at the wheel barings!! they are notorious for going out and causing vibration. just thought i'd warn ya.

here is a pic of my project.

it costs me
$424 for 6 months for both kinds of coverage (liability and the other one that covers my damages)

though it is under my parent's plan, with me as a driver, so its not a fair comparison

go state farm!
