well it really depends on what you like.....imports vs. domestic cars, old cars/new, body styles, rear drive/front, manual/auto, gas mileage etc. etc.
Personally i prefer domestic cars, like Ford and even chevy. i've got a 1992 ford mustang GT 5.0L. its rear wheel drive. You can find a good 89-93 5.0 Liter mustang easily in your price range of $4K! The 5.0 stangs are about 225 hp, and still fast..about 14-14.5 seconds in the 1/4 mile stock, and if you put a little money into the engine down the road you can have yourself a FAST car. mine runs high 12's or low 13'2 in the 1/4 mile. PLUS, the cost of the parts for an 89-93 stang are very inexpensive compared to alot of other cars. not to mention that its EXTREMELY easy to do alot of your own work on the car and engine. dont listen if your friends try and tell ya that these cars wont go fast! if you get a stang you'll smoke any civic or ricer that trys to race you. so in short, i recommend an 89-93 ford mustang GT Hatchback, manual trans. just make sure you're lookin at a V8 and not a 4 cyl ok?! the mileage should be under 100,000 i'd say. The car will go well over 100,000 miles though dont worry. check AUTOTRADER.COM and you can find pretty much any car that is around you for sale. good luck! sorry its so long |

Mustangs are also crudely made, designed and have very little capability on road courses. Of course since there are heavy regulations on Emissions in the states- so you are denied the best imports- so if you want a performance car for cheap then a Domestic is the way to go- if you want a quick-ish economy car- then go Japanese- Honda, Mazda, Toyota, Mitsubishi and Nissan are all highly reccomended

You could probably get a used integra for that money, though it probably won't be a GS-R. However, the base integra's are better for turbo applications because of the lower compression ratio, so that's something to consider.

Well...if you want to go fast for cheap and have a car that can handle...
240SX man...you can pick one up for less than 4k (the S13 model 89-94) and do some forced induction for cheap...a custom turbo kit for around 1600 bux will give you around 240rwhp...or you can go SR, RB or CA...whatever you want...SCC has some good articles on making 240SX's go! |

for 4k on a car that you want to go fast?
if you want reliability I'm going with an integra or 240sx (what i'm looking at for around 10k) If you want just straight up power and speed, go with the stang guy or better yet get a used z28 (early 90's) if you can for 4k |
