Junkyard Pricing

Hello All,

What do you think a junkyard would pay for a wrecked F-body Camaro? The reason is I am thinking of putting an add in the local paper for such a car if the price is right, and then, have a donor car at my disposal...What do you think?

Re: Junkyard Pricing

well it depends how wrecked is your car, what kind of engine/tranny do you have? do you have rims? does it still run? there's alot of factors

Re: Junkyard Pricing

Personally, I wouldn't give a wrecked car to a junkyard. You would get a lot more money for it if you strip the internal components and sell them individually.

Re: Junkyard Pricing

Stryker, you hit the nail right on the head...I have found several Camaros (unfortunately) in the local junkyards and am thinking of trying to BUY one from some unfortunate, to have as my own donor car for the parts etc...My question is... is there a norm that the "junking" industry uses or is it just on an individual basis...then with that information I can place an add advertising that I would pay more than a junkyard, and hopefully score a car that is wrecked from behing and have the whole front end to harvest...

junkyards around here wont sell you a car. mainly cause they know they can make more money by parting it out. also because some of there vehicles dont have titles

Re: Junkyard Pricing

lol i understood, but it could have been more clear. learned the hard way that as amazing as F-bodys are, they cannot float eh?. talk to an auto wrecker, ask him what he would give you for yours and go from there. ask a few.

Junkyards sometimes get paid for taking them. The junkyard will want to make their money back for one decent part, and try to get them free to avoid the overhead. At most, I would say the most they'd give is $200, because insurance and loan companies write them off. Once the adjuster says "totalled", the loan company wants to get their money from insurance. Technically, the insurance company now owns it. If they do come after the car, the junkyard will tell them they are free to come and get it after the tow & storage fees are paid (like Joe Dirt, member? Same scenario for a private party owner here). Insurance companies normally cut their losses here on a totalled car, and normally surrender rights for a junk title.

Most Junkyards will only pay $100.00 for a car and thats only if it starts and has a title, 50 for a full sized vehicle such as van, truck, 40 for mod sized and 30 for import sized but thats here in Illinois and they still have to have a title.

Re: Junkyard Pricing

My friend had to pay $20 to have a junkyard come and get a Chevette he bought for 10 bucks, the thing ran and had a title but no plates so he couldn't drive it there.
