Leaky 96 Cherokee, what's Up!
I've got a '96 Cherokee that I'm trying to sell, and it all of sudden sprung a leak. It's leaking radiator fluid from the water pump, I think.
It's only got 84k miles and I asked a couple of guys and they didn't think a water pump would have problems with only 84k on it. I replaced the lower radiator hose last night and it's still leaking this morning, although it seems to be leaking less. It seems to only leak right after you turn it off, while it's running it doesn't appear to leak, as soon as you turn it off, it's start's dripping fluid off the lower hose, the leak must be coming from above where the lower hose clamps on the water pump, but I can't see up there where it's leaking. Anybody seen this problem? Are water pumps a pain to remove? How do I get the bolts off the water pump pulley? Do I need to pull the fan clutch off and the shroud or can I squeeze it out once I remove the power steering pump? It's been a great Jeep, too bad I have to sell it, but it's a pain messing with this when I trying to show it to people who want to buy. "Yea, it's a great car, just don't look at that puddle on the ground right there!?!" ![]() Thanks in advance, Rhino. |

Here is my
Just a suggestion. Go and spray down your motor if it is not clean then drive it till it gets hot. Go home and carefully look for the leak. You will find it if it is hot. As for the water pump not being bad at 84000 miles. That is CRAP! They can go any time just like everything else. If it is leaking a little now it will only get worse. Find the leak and take care of it. Keep on Jeepin!

I just replaced the water pump on my 95 Jeep with 130,000 miles last week. There is a weep hole on the bottom side of the pump. When it leaks the water runs down on the hose and looks like the hose is bad (I replaced the hose first). It isn't to hard to replace if you have ever worked on cars much. It is easier to remove the electric fan and shroud. You don't have to remove the belt driven fan but I did remove the shroud to give me room to work. Leave the belt tight until you remove the bolts that hold the water pump pully. Next remove the power stearing pump. Remove the idler pully that is mounted to the A/C bracket so you can get the pump off. Remove the 4 bolts that hold the pump on. I hope this is enough info.
