ignition switch

hello i have a 2000 pont. grand am and just recently the would not turn the ignition. I hav tried everything and cant figure out what is wrong w/ it. Is it a bad idea for me to take it off and take it to a locksmith or can a locksmiyth even fix it.I dont know if its my key since it fairly comes out easy once its started, or the pass lock system, ignition cylinder or switch.I dont want to spend alot of money when it could be something minor. I have had the car for about 2 yrs can the ignition just go out due to wear and tear. Please send me some trouble shooting tips or ideas on what i should do thanks.
