Crankshaft out of time?

I just did the timing belt on my 96 turbo, and when all put back together, its showing the crankshaft being 5 degrees off according to the sprocket and the lower timing belt cover. The closest I can get it set is 5 degrees off according to the cover, but under the cover everything seems to be just fine, and looking down the plug holes, the number one piston seems to be at TDC, and the cams marks line up as well. My question is basically this, am I misreading the cover or am I missing something with the install? pics would help... thanks!

Re: Crankshaft out of time?

Did you put the crank pulley on properly.

Ignition timing is totally different from valve timing

Re: Crankshaft out of time?

The crank pulley only goes on one way that I'm aware of, because its keyed. But the marks on the pulley don't line up with the marks on the plastic cover, so they show me as being 5 degrees off, which is making me worried.

Re: Crankshaft out of time?

The notch in the seperater plate is lined up to the mark cast in the front cover though?

Re: Crankshaft out of time?

are you talking about the plate behind the timing belt? if so the marks on that plate and the marks on the crankshaft line up, just when the cover goes on and the sprocket goes on the notch on them don't line up

Re: Crankshaft out of time?

yes thats the seperator plate. IF thats on the mark, regardless of where the cams are, the timing notch on the crank pulley has to line up to the mark on the plastic tiing belt cover.... It is possible to put the plate on backwards, but that will through it off closer to ~60 degrees than 5... That is very odd. I'm ont sure what it can be.

Re: Crankshaft out of time?

Yes, that would be great. I am also very confused. I have done quite a few Tbelts and this is odd.
