When you see someone in their car...

...do you make judments or assumptions on their success, their happiness, or status?

On another board I roam on there was a thread about this. Some people said having a nice car, and living at home with parents is ok, as long your parents have a nice house. (So does that mean if your parents house isn't all that, its not ok?) Another said all he was striving for was a nice car. Then there was a big flame war about people living on farms (how that got to be, I don't know) then the thread disappeared

But anyway, do you have a critical eye when you see someone driving an older, run down car? Or do you feel like lesser of a person when you drive by someone whose car cost more than your house?

To me, a car doesn't make you who YOU are. It's your personality. Sure some cars show status, but how many BMW/Benz/other luxury car drivers out there are really living it up? I have come across people who are just "driving their bank account"..they have a super nice car, but live in a not so great house or apartment, or they are in as much debt as our (America's) national debt if not worse.

I notice that alot (not all) people driving luxury cars don;t appear to be happy. They look like they are getting weary from living up to an image or perceived status. They look like they are worrying about where the next payment will come from or dreading going home to an unhappy household. Then there are the few who actually look like they are enjoying themselves and not a care in the world. I see the same with drivers of beaters, however less number of them have the "unhappy scowl" on their faces. Some look content, others happy, and some look like they wish they were in another place/another time.

So what's your view on this?

My car is there to get me where I need to be, I would sooner live in a comfortable house than drive a flashy car.

As long I am happy with the car I drive, why should I care about what anyone else thinks?

Well is some cases I agree with you, but then there are times where i see some guy driving a brand new ferrari and i realize that even though he could technically live in the car and have no house or anything, insurance on one of those is like 50,000 a year so i can pretty much assume the guy driving it is loaded out of his skull and is probably generally happy with his llife...lol..i would be too.

I have never looked down on someone for the car they drive, I have much more respect for someone with a shit car and living on their on than for someone with a great ride living at home with dad.

I myself have probably too much car than I can afford but I am able to make rent, payments and insurance with some left over say that works out. In the end the car should have value so I am not losing the money where if I didn't have the car I would be blowing it on woman and booze.

I need to take back my first sentance... i do look down on cars when they are made to be annoying and to look stupid, rather than start any fights I will leave it at that.

A guy driving a Ferrari with a house to match is one thing, he has the money to buy both.
A guy driving a Ferrari and living in a run down shack on the other hand is just plain stupidity.

I make judgments on how someone drives their car more then what they are driving.

As far as the car that they are driving. If I see a seventy year old in a Ferrari – I think he’s having fun with his retirement. If I see someone driving a rust bucket Chevette with five young kids in the car, I assume they’re probably looking paycheck to paycheck. Most everyone else fits somewhere in-between.

Having money or not having money really doesn’t have too much bearing on ones happiness. Sure money would alleviate some issues people have, but it wont make one happier by just being there. In the same way money is not root of all evil, it is not the source of happiness. So, having more money means you have more options in the car you purchase. No more – no less.

thats my view. if you blow everything on a car and live in a one bedroom apartment with concrete floors and white walls....thats plain stupid. but if you have a sprawling mansion and have a ferrari to go in the garage..you should be happy.

im not saying that u necessarily have to have a junky car for a nice house or vise versa ..but in MY view..id split the cash and say..if i have a 200,000 $ house..i wanna 200,000$ car

Hell I judge people by the car they are driving. Shit you can tell alot about a person by what car they drive. If they keep it clean. If the car is stock. What mods they have done to it. All theses things can tell you alot about the person driving the car.

This gives you an insight to their personality a bit, yes. I dont even wanna know what people think of my car right now.

- needs wash
- 17" silver wheels on front
- 14" black steelies on back (both rear tires split on me)
- its a Neon
- AC compressor is rattling

At least the interior is lovely I cleaned it out at the gas station earlier on my lunch break.

It's a shame that $200,000 won't even get you a nice house anymore.

As far as the nice cars, I'd love to have one, but I'll settle for a nice bike.

It's a Yugo. It must either say "that guy can keep anything running, and is obviously a smart person worth being around" or "that guys a cheap-ass, check you pockets and wallet after talking to him"

I tend to judge people by what they drive, but in saying that i couldn't care less what they drive.
If i see someone in a big flash car i tend to think that this is a person that most have a good job and cash to burn to be able to afford something like that. But most people i know that do drive something like this are so far up there own-arse's they are not worth knowing.
Most people i see in old shitters give me the impression that they are not to well-off and are probably living it from pay check to paye check.
In no way i think these people are any different, they are just the average person IMO.

not reading any other posts, I'll go ahead and put in my .02... I am a
COMPLETE and total car snob. Hell I'm just a snob. Like today, my dad said I couldn't take his car to work cause he needed it (my car is wrecked), and I would have to take my old beater 87 ranger.... I called in sick to work. I don't judge others based on their cars.. if I see a porsche or something, it's actually very very rare that I even see the person behind the wheel. I'm looking at the car itself and admiring the work of art that's next to me. I don't judge people in other cars, but I do feel like I'm being judged. Don't ask why. I have a princess syndrome, baaaad. I always have the newest, the nicest, the rarest, whatever. It's just me. Yes I'm spoiled, yes I can be a bitch, and yes I do love my daddy... even though there are times that his card do more to make me feel better than he ever could. ok... rambling girl out. :-D
