Quick question for anyone with a winch or looking to buy one. What is the best winch for the money? I dont have alot of money to spend on a winch, Will a 4500lb winch with a snatch block be enough? I plan on buying a winch within the next 6 months or so. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
Thanx Ken

Warn XD9000
Most of our club members that have winches have the Warn XD9000. With a snatch block you cut your effective 100' line to 50'.

If I could only get a 4500lbs winch I would look at getting a kick ass Tirfor. It will give you more options than the winch.
Even with my XD9000 I still might look at getting this thing since you have so many options with it. You could do the opposite and start with it and then get a 9000 winch later. Just a thought |

ARB mounted winch
Patience is a virtue!! Save some cash and buy a 9000#, faster recovery speed and you can always move the winch to bigger things if you ever get a bigger truck. No offense- and these guys may be going overboard but- I know guys who have 4500 pound winches on ATVs.

There's discussion on XOC about a new Milemarker E8000 winch. Electric, not hydraulic, and about $400 or so I think. Not as fast as the Warn, and loses pulling strength faster per wind on the spool, but probably the best budget winch. It's not quite for sale yet but will be in a month or two.

Thanx for all of the replies. The MileMarker winch is something I'll definitely be checking out. I read the post on XOC, very interesting and affordable. As far as something for right now, I already have a hand winch, Come-A-long. 4000 lb pull with 6 feet of cable. I guess Im good for now. Thanx again

6' of cable
I think I would carry at least a 50' extension! I also have a hand winch but it holds 50' of cable. It has a snatch block on it as well. I will carry it even when I get a real winch. As far as winches go I will get the Milemarker Hydraulic 10K when the time comes. No need to change the battery, alternator or rewire half the truck. It will run all day long (unlike an electric )under water (unlike an electric ) and costs about the same. The install requires a bit of hydraulic hose work to the power steering pump and a simple 2 amp connection to the battery. Now before someone points out that the engine must be running before I can use it? Let me remind you that the only time the truck won't be running is when it's under water. In that case the electric won't work either! THAT'S why you wheel with a buddy with a winch :smoker2: |

But here are the caveats both ways. Electric winches are prone to overheating. Electric winches generally have a slow line feed. (Warn 8274 excepted) Electric winches generally require two batteries and rewiring of the electrical system. Hydraulic winches require the engine to be running. Hydraulic winches require rehosing of the power steering system. Hydraulic winches are only as good as the pump driving them. The X/Frontier pumps drive the MileMarker winch at well below stated specs due to its lower pressure of operation. (For those in doubt, it has been tested by MileMarker and it runs about 1,500 to 2,000 lbs under the original MileMarker rating. So a 10,000 lb MileMarker rating would make a 8,000 to 8,500 lb winch in an X/Frontier.) I have seen both the electric and hydraulic winches in action. The MileMarker kicks butt in line speed and continuous power (it has a fast and slow line speed). It is a well-built and powerful winch. Cost is about the same as the electric winch and in most cases, the MileMarker comes with a power steering adapter kit. I have known some people to have leakage problems with them, but that isn't too common and I would probably attribute most of it to a failure on the installers part. What the user has to decide is the enviroment it may be used in as well as the vehicle. Since dual batteries is a tough proposition in the X, I would recommend using the hydraulic if you can. |
