2002-2014 Volvo XC90 Removing Stuck Key

2002-2014 Volvo XC90 Removing Stuck Key

Tools:
Plastic Trim Tool Kit

Problem:
Key will stay stuck in ignition and will not return to off/lock position

Repair:
This is a problem with shift lock. You may also experience a harder time getting the shifter in and out of the park position. Very carefully pull up on the shifter. You want the shift knob to release but you dont want the boot to slide off as this is difficult to get back on. The panel that the boot connects to you want to lift up by the cup holder. You can use your hands or a plastic pry tool. On the left side of the shifter assembly you will find a yellow tab. You then want to move this and shake the shifter until the key comes out.

To prevent this issue from happening as often you can buy a replacement assembly, or you can use a penetrating oil to prevent the assembly from sticking. If you use penetrating oil this can cause more issues in the future from dust and debris clinging to the oil.

Re assembly is as simple as snapping the cover back in place and re installing the shift knob.
