88 LTD stalls when gear changed

Hello everyone,
I'm new to the forums and just got a hand me down LTD crown vic 1988, its not very well taken care off and has a couple problems every now and then.. I've recently been having a problem which is after starting the engine, on idle, the rpm isnt stable, it rises a bit then drops a bit then rises, so on, then sometimes, more often than not, soon as i change the gear the engine stalls and turns off, then i have to restart it to get going again. It happens mostly when i shift from P to R then after it turns off if i put it in N and start then put it in D it'll run fine but if instead i put it in R it'll quit again. Any help is appreciated, I've had an interest in classic cars since my childhood and finally have a chance to own and work on one.

Since not well taken care of. Start with a full tune-up.
