Nothing wrong with an Auto Z28... Your friend is nuts... Well if you want to go fast and want top end, go with the LS1s, the LT1s have a low-grunt on them but not that good up on top. The Autos can be made fast with a high-stall converter, gears (4.10s all the way, but if youre worried about gas mileage and might get a power adder, get 3.73s), air lid, filter, Y-pipe w/ exhaust and DRs; that combo right there should be good for 12s all day, and no worry about missing gears
I would really put the money on an LS1 98-02.. the 01-02 have a bit more rwhp to them due to the Ls6 intake, diff. cam, also no EGR

Oh and i forgot to say that if you go with a high stall converter like 3200rpm+ youll need an Aux. trans. cooler. Note... a 3200rpm stall is actually a 3600rpm stall.

man dont let people get you worried about the manuals. my 70 z-28 eats up sticks all the time. i dont race underdogs either. ive got a 396 with 570 hp, 400 turbo trans (automatic) with a 4;11;1 rear end. Ive race big blocks with 2 carbs and beat em. corvettes are nothing and mustangs are a joke just make sure it runs right and like the fell for it.Personally though I think you should go with a ram air trans am thier faster and if u want a ballzie car put a corvette drive train on it, a buddy of mine did and it did 205 mph on the quarter mile w/ a performance chip and a good ol' k&n air filter and hell smoke me "in the long run".
light 2 light i still got em. enjoy ur ride what ever u get.

The LS1 F-Body cars are the same motor as the LS1 Vette's. Just 'rated' lower.

And I seriously doubt your buddy ran 205mph in the 1/4 with just a Chip and Filter. I hope you ment 105mph...

Ive never heard of that happening. How can it jump from 105mph(average) through the 1/4mi to 205mph with just a drivetrain, chip and filter? And the Ram Airs being faster... thats only in the mind. Ive seen a totally bone stock 6spd Z28 beat T/A R/A through the quarter by over 2 tenths ... "factory freak" The SS/ Ram Airs/ Firehawks, as badass as they are, are not really that much different than a Formula-T/A or a Z28... just cosmetics and ram air(if you can call it that) Plus theyre alot cheaper (the Z28s/Forumla-T/As that is ).

Autos for drag racing and 6speed for road race car. Autos with V8's are usualy faster cause a V8 manual will have traction problems ( except on mustangs since they have no power j/k) 4cyl hondas require manuals since they lack torque Go with the auto if your a straight line racer...like the other peeps say get some long tube headers, exhaust, filter, higher stall and some 3.73' should work good for a street/strip ride. BTW Id get a Camaro over a T/A..the T/A is more buttrock and Kid Rock always rolls them

You know though, id vote against the 3.73s. Not much of a change from the 3.23s to 3.73s. Id go with 4.10s, maybe even higher... Dont fear the gear, unless youre going to get a supercharger or run nitrous.
