Exclamation Lancia (Delta S4) ECV1 - 1/24 scale

well, after the adventure with the ecv2 (http://www.automotiveforums.com/vbul....php?t=1144070 ) I decided to build also her previous sister, the ecv1.

The real original vehicle, born as experimental platform for new materials in the late 80s has been scrapped and converted into the ecv2 car, however due to the passion of a great italian mechanic and team manager Beppe Volta, all enthusiast rally fan could see her today existing and racing in historical competitions.
Volta didnt make a replica of the ecv, cause he really used all the parts coming from the original delta s4 project, exactly as Abarth did to produce this monster. Only the triflux engine was different in the beginning here, more similar to an "ordinary" s4 (LOL...ordinary... ...monster power..).
Lately the car was update with a real triflux rebuild by original parts from its developer enginner of back in time. Full story here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lancia_ECV

Sadly, really sadly, this man die 2 days ago in a tragic and stupid car accident outside Torino ..

And here my model.
I started with an old resin bodyshell couming from a very early delta s4 resin production I made 10 yrs ago. The caster of those parts was really amateur and my trial to keep the price considerably low (wonder why thinking back at the behave of some fellows..) made it a real success, in the way of resin kit numbers.
This body was a bad copy that I immediately planned to convert into an ecv1, far before Volta refurbish his real one and at the time I had very few documentation (and probably less skills) to make it as I like.

Real car is the red one here..

the triflux ecv engine, even if also this model I will build as curbside car

and Volta during the recostruction of the car (white parts are originals S4)

Re: Lancia (Delta S4) ECV1 - 1/24 scale

One of the hardest part for me was the front end grille. This was never clear in pics before volta refurbish, and I started when I finally had a CLEAR pic of the numbers of the fenders present. The hard part is to scribe, engrave and cut all those little thin lines over this very hard resin, that should also look straigt and parallel, and finally..thin in sections.A real nightmare...at least for my hands. But test after test I think I get a pretty decent result

then time to rebuild the front spoiler, also here very different from delta s4 part. The air ducts must be also open. patience, filler and minidrill come definitely useful...

I`m not sure about ten years ago, but now your modelling skills are superb.
Another fantastic project this you have started, and great tribute to one of the great Lancia`s lovers.
RIP, Beppe Volta

Re: Lancia (Delta S4) ECV1 - 1/24 scale

Probably yes George. From what I can remember there are no models around in 1/24 of this strange lancia. It could be surely interesting, but before....I must do it properly

Re: Lancia (Delta S4) ECV1 - 1/24 scale

so now is time to fix the side skirts and prepare the rear area, quite different from delta s4. This pic helps me a lot in understanding shapes and proportions

the side intakes fits directly to the external part of the last c pillar. Is a messy shape cause starts straight and ends curved. There is no way to make it just with plain plasticard. Several trials didnt convince me, so thinking on how to do it I ended with a thermo vacuforming of the intakes over a dyme done in wood.
It is not easy as it sound, thrust me. The hardest here was get the correct allignment of the part, and is important those are welldone cause they are very very exposed on the model. Basically half car..

here my attempt

here in background u see the wood dimes

Re: Lancia (Delta S4) ECV1 - 1/24 scale

and now is time to prepare the rear bumper. this part is totally scratch. Plasticard 1mm and 0.75 for the pourpose..

and then time to refine the lower part of the main air intakes and clean all area...

and a first coat of primer to see the overall looks of my ecv1

Great build Paolo! My meeting with Mario Cavaniero at Italtecnica last Septembre led me to discover his amazing workshop. R.I.P Beppe Volta!

Re: Lancia (Delta S4) ECV1 - 1/24 scale

Hello Paolo, amazing Scratchbuild as usual...

Last week the sad news about Giuseppe accident, finishes with my project to go to the Italy to visit Volta Team and meet Giuseppe.

My father was born in Italy and since I was a child with 4, 5 years old I am fan of Lancia Rally Cars.

I really want to buy one kit of each, if possible - ECV 1 & ECV 2....

How can I do to have these to masterpieces?

Thanks in advance!

Best Regards.

Carlos Malfitani

Re: Lancia (Delta S4) ECV1 - 1/24 scale

time to fit the rear grill vents. This is a specifical part of this ecv. The complex upper wing I had to rebuild 3 times before get a convincing shape and setting
For pics is just temporary fixed

still didnt decide how to do with the roof of my model.
Volta vehicle had the 2 squared vents cause probably they took the central body part from a delta s4 car, while the original ecv1 done by lancia was closed on the top and had different decals there. This part then become central body for ecv2, that correctly I let closed.
Probably, if I plan to cast this, it could be beter to leave them for both options, or close the holes leaving a sign in the under part if someone prefer to make the car all can see today

original Lancia roof here:

as well as cap fillers are different in the first ecv1 to volta ecv1 (and I already closed it)

I think because probably then, the only real difference to lancia ecv to volta car will be only in the full carbon fiber chassis, made as unique type and today inside the body of ecv2...
really x-lancia- files
