88 chev 4.3 no start w/spark & fuel

The truck just quit having any throttle control which seemed to be ignition. Way old stuff needed replacing so I went after that. Installed complete new distributer, coil and spark control module. No good. Found spark using checker but not sure what this should really look like. While checking compression found a lot of fuel coming out of number 6 cylinder and nothing out of any of the others. Compression in all cylinders is around 120. Distributer timing at number 1 TDC looks good. I am thinking some fuel system related issue but cannot figure out why so much fuel comes out of the number 6 cylinder. I am thinking that the answer will also be my fix.

Put a good spark plug in the number six plug wire ground the plug have someone else crank the engine. You should observe spark.
The distributor cap and rotor are good places to check.
A bad temperature sensor will add more fuel like a stuck choke.
Check the fuel pressure a pressure regulator is in the throttle body.
If you get it running watch the bottom of the two injectors. Excessive fuel running of one indicates a leaking injector.
http://www.rockauto.com/ sells a kit for the throttle body.
As to only number six getting all the fuel if it was sitting a long time mud daubers may have plugged part of your intake. You may have to remove it and blow it out throughly then wash and dry. If you had six injectors I would checking for a leaking injector.

Re: 88 chev 4.3 no start w/spark & fuel

I managed to get the truck to fire and I think tomorrow I will finish. One of my issues is the final timing. The crank balancer has 2 timing marks to use for TDC. I have tried each using a compression gauge to show me number 1 at TDC then picking a mark. They are 90 deg apart and I think that I actually need to be right in between them. I cannot find anything about 2 marks in any literature. I did rebuild the fuel regulator on the TBI just in case. Anyway, I will try the middle ground on the timing marks and see what happens. Thank you for your reply.

Use google search 88Chevy 4.3l timing marks
It shows how to set timing.
