Ferrari 312T2, Hasegawa 1/20

Hi

so I'll take on Hasegawas first 1/20 F1 kit... the engine was airbrushed (X11+X12) and the intake trumpets and mesh from the etch-addon fitted. There is no cabling in the kit, but that can't be with such a nice kit, so I built it myself. The distributor had marks where to drill holes for the ignition cables, the fuel lines I just put on the correct part.

Please ignore the nail, it's just for holding the engine

What version are you doing, Lauda or Clay?

Looks good so far, I do like these mid 70's ferrari's

Glad to see someone building this new kit. I've been really excited about the new releases from Hasegawa and Fujimi

You have done a great job on the wiring of the HT cables and fuel lines. Having seen how vibrant a colour X-12 (Gold Leaf) looks, I'd be tempted to go with X-31 (Titanium Gold). It is difficult to tell without seeing it in person though, so what is your view on the colour for the engine block?

My first try was X12 alone, but I did't like it, so I coated it again with mixing X11+X12 (50/50) which looks nice IMHO. I don't have X31, so I don't know how that looks. I read that sometimes the engines were flat alu instead of gold, so that would be another option...

I think I'll go for Lauda.

I don't know enough about the 312T2 to know for sure what colour the engine block should be. I've just looked in F1 Modeling Vol. 37 and can find a rather poor reference photograph showing the block to definitely have a gold colour to it. I would imagine that X11+X12 (50/50) describes the colour of X-31 (Titanium Gold) perfectly.

Well, we are both right - I checked the pictures I found on the web, and I have pictures of both variants - light gold and aluminium/steel. But I prefer the gold anyway

I finished gearbox, rear suspension and brakes. The brake air ducts are transparent (smoke + transparent orange) but it doesn't really show on the photo. Be careful when building the kit, the plastic is a bit brittle sometimes, I have to redo one of the rear suspension parts...
And a personal premiere: first time I overcame my fear of damaging parts and made improved rear dampers - took upper and lower part of the kit part, a metal rod and wire - not perfect, but I think I might do that more often, now

Nice work Marco and well done for attempting something new and making the suspension coils (springs) from scratch. It isn't easy getting the suspension to be the correct size (I know) but you have done very well. Shame we can't see the clear brake ducts so well in your photograph... I know that they are very hard to photograph.

Chassis and front suspension are finished and I also added the exhausts. I'm not sure If I take the belt part from the kits (as in the photo) or the etched parts.

Unfortunately the decals for the red areas around the intakes are lighter than Zero Paints Rosso 70/80s!

I used the decals, because masking the intakes would be rather finicky, but the colors are a bit different... it's not the end of the world as decal and bodycolor always connect at an edge, but perfectionists may choose to mask or use a lighter colour.

How is the quality of this new kit?
Its looking superb by the way, any chance of some nice close up pictures, or just more pictures.

I had another look under different lights - the decals are definitively not dark enough, closer to TS36(McLaren Red!) than to TS8 or Zero Paints Rosso 70/80
Luckily I scanned the decals before use and will try to print them a bit darker.

And for the numbers on the cowling - either mask it off (and part the green/white/red stripe) or lay several layers of white decals unter the number, like I did, or the edge will shine through.

I painted some more parts, added cockpit and wiring and then test fitted everything together.

Until now everything was only test-fitted, now I glued on the coolers and married engine and chassis. Then I could place al the cables. The wings are done, too, so not that much to do.
It's truly an excellent kit, must buy for all F1 builders.

I mentioned the problem with the red of the decals - I tried to print them, but that didn't work, masking seemed a bit difficult - so I got my airbrush, sprayed the Zero Paints red on decal paper, covered it with Liquid Decal Film, cut it out - and perfect! Luckily the sponsor decals were included without the red background, too, for those who want to paint the red.
