2002 Alero Power Steering Leak
A Power Steering leak has developed on my 2002 Alero's driver side near the front wheel. I 've been aware from other posts that it may be the Rack and Pinion, a power steering pump or a seal. There has been no noises in my steering when I drive and its steering well as it ever was. I am wondering is there a way to detect what of the three things it may be?, without taking it into a dealership or shop?/ I've been told a Rack and Pinion is about $600 so I am exploring all options before hand. Any help with opinions or experiences will be appreciated.

Re: 2002 Alero Power Steering Leak
Have you been adding fluid to the p/s reservoir ? It could also be a p/s hose.

Not to much fluid as I just noticed the leak 3 days ago. Where is the P/S Hose?

Re: 2002 Alero Power Steering Leak
I have one of the same year and it's been leaking PS fluid for years. Some Lucas P.S. Stop leak has slowed it down quite a bit at least, and might get around to fixing it someday.
Anyways, Common problem on these are the input shaft seal for the P.S. Rack starts to leak. These really aren't serviceable, at least not cheaply. So it's usually more cost effective to just replace the rack. It's not easy to see, but that's exactly what's leaking on mine. |
