Most of shines probably came from sanding and polishing although clear coates will make it shine

I use clear coat mainly for protection against sanding through the paint and more visual "depth".
(the FAQ is your freind ) |

Model Master makes Clear Gloss coat in a bottle, I've used it with effectice results and a bunch of cars, unfortunaly a lot say that it "yellows" of time, so they don't recomend it, but mine seems to remain a clear color. So use it at your own risk.

The only thing with Tamiya is that you have to watch curing times. Supposedly you need to either apply clear coat immediately (within an hour) after the color coats, or wait a couple weeks for the color coats to fully cure. That is, according to Scale Auto anyway. I try to avoid Tamiya when I can because of this. That and the price. |
