Exclamation 85 318i idleing from 1000rpm to 1500 erratically

I have recently purchased my first bmw a 85 318i and have run into some problems. The most prevailent problem is that it is hard to start and when it does it jumps quikly to an idle of 1000rpm and then continues to jump from there to 1500 and back again. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
