Using Rustoleum Primer

Just wondering if anyone has tried their primer with lacquer paints?

I just bought some of their black automotive primer as I thought it would be a cheaper alternative to zero paints black primer. Im just wanting to make sure the primer will hold up to the color coats.

I just sprayed a spare piece of plastic with it and I happen to catch a wiff of it and it smelled like enamel. (I was wearing a respirator). The can says it's suitable for most automotive lacquers but I don't see many people on the forum using it.

Just have to try it on spare plastic. I do lots of stuff most people don't do, like use Krylon spray cans...

In a similar vein, I use a primer aimed at model soldier painters,The Army Painter brand, fine for acrylic colours but not for automotive clear. It cracks.

No advantage to it specifically, it may even be to 'hot' for some plastics
For spray cans best to stick to the primer matching the brand/type of paint you're going to apply, general automotive primer works well when using auto lacquer sprays
My preference is to use always use Tamiya fine primer as first layer still

I've used it once, and I don't think I'll be using it again.

It seemed to go down really thick, a lot thicker than other primers, and it left a texture that I was left w/ no choice but to spend a lot of time trying to polish out so I would end with a decent color finish over the top of the primer.

I agree with the others that this stuff is too thick for models. But I think all those primers that are not hobby specific go on too heavily, except, oddly enough, the WalMart product sold as Colorplace paint.

I can recommend Rustoleum's lacquer paints, especially the gloss clear. They work really well though they only come in a few colors. Few but useful colors like black and white. But the clear is outstanding and very forgiving.

Well I just gave that spare piece a paint job in ford lacquer sonic blue. It's held up so far and I cleared it with future. But I do agree it is too thick to use on body for example. But it might be pretty useful in mass black parts and undercarriage stuff. It seems to dry pretty fine with little to no orange peel or texture.
