Crash course rallying (56k, beware)

Not much to do on this forum these days.
Just to make this forum a bit alive again a few photos from Marcus' crash on the 2002 rally of Great Britain.

This is a course on how to make a wreck of a rally car in 5 seconds.

1. Think before you crash. You might end up hurting people, so think, think, think.

2. Pedal to the metal, and on a good spot just give it a go.

3. Ask some spectators to roll the car over a few times for extra damage.

4. Admire the result.

5. Even more admiring, maybe take some pictures, and phone home to tell what you just did.

6. Collect parts that lay around, do not, I repeat, do not leave parts in free nature.

7. Take a last photo. Call Provera, tell him what you have done and enjoy his yelling at you.

8. You can also crash with more than 1 car, what the heck, make a crash contest of it.

Ok, now for the serious part. Man, what a crash this was.
Jani Paasonen and Thomas Kuchar did the same thing.
Anybody know why this could happen? Problems with the pacenotes? or just bad luck.

Talking

Nice

I think it was something unexpected on the road, perhaps too much dirt.

Isn't that one of the corners that was causing trouble though because they were on gravel tyres and they had a stretch of tarmac in the middle of the stage.....

I know there were several complaints about that on Rally GB last year.....

If they had cut the corner more they'd have been in the dirt not on the unexpectedly slippery tarmac which was the problem.

I remember thinking at the time that previous competitors cutting the corners and dragging mud onto the tarmac could have contributed to the accident. Pure speculation. However, notice the first dozen or so cars passed without incident, then several shAnts happened in quick sucession before the crews are warned about the slippery section. Fits the facts Ma'm.
