2003 Taurus - Unknow Engine Idle Noise

Ford 2003 Taurus:

Background:

52,000 miles

Regular maintenance

New tensioner pulley & belt

Situation:

An unidentifiable noise is generated while engine is at idle. The sound does not seem to be originating from the accessory drive (Serpentine belt & tensioner). The tensioner pulley and belt were replaced with no change in situation.

Noise: Is an itermittent squeaking sound which may be coming from the topside/backside of the engine. The sound is inaudible when rpms are increased:

* There may be a technical service bulletin (#0311) for this problem, but I have been unable to access.

* Are there any blowers etc within the air intake or fuel injection system?

Last, any assistance would be most appreciated. Serving in Germany with US military with access to a limited capability base service garage.

Thank you

Re: 2003 Taurus - Unknow Engine Idle Noise

remove the serp belt, see if the noise goes away. That'll rule out all of the accessories

otherwise, get a stethoscope....best tool for hunting down noises

DOHC or OHV?

Re: 2003 Taurus - Unknow Engine Idle Noise

I found a tsb about a vibration from the cooling fans but it only occurred when AC is on and outside temp is 80F/27C or above.

but that would be the front of the engine

tsb# 03-11-1

the other one i found is a ticking sound coming from the left bank camshaft. use a long screwdriver and check near cyl 6 for the ticking sound. The left bank is the one on the right when looking at the acc belt. cyl 6 is either closer to the acc belt or further away (yeah I can't remember how they're numbered)

tsb# 04-20-8

I know neither of these are squeaks but these are the tsb's I found. good luck.

one of the things i do is take a can of power lube and start spraying the pulley's of the accesories, not where the belt hits but behind where they are on their bearings.

Ford V6s come in all the time for a random squeek. The cam synchro usually fixes it.

EDIT: Just noticed how old this thread is. Let it die.
