Camshaft Position Sensor disconnected- still runs

Ok got a code for the camshaft position sensor yet again. In the process of checking it out I disconnected it and the vehicle still runs fine and starts with no problem. How could this be?

I had a bad cam pos sensor on my old winnie. When i pulled it apart it was basically just a blob of metal left. It ate itself. I drove the van around like that for four years plus. It even passed emissions test with this problem. It was a fairly expensive replacement, so i just lived everyday staring at the CEL. Does not answer the question but it is possible.
