Squeal with surp. belt off ??? 2004 Freestar 4.2 L
I have a 2004 Ford Freestar with a 4.2 L engine. I have a squeal that I thought was a pulley locking up which caused a loud squeal then the engine would die. I removed the surp. Belt and started the engine, the squeal is still present. Sounds just like a belt but the squeal is coming from inside the vehicle. This vehicle has a timing chain so no other belt that I’m aware of. I realize this sound may not be a belt but that is the best description. Any thoughts or feedback would be appreciated.

Your squealing is coming from the camshaft synchronizer. Here is a link to the solution of replacing the synchronizer.
