1995 LeSabre Limited horn wire description at air bag module
I inherited Mom's 95 LeSabre when she decided to stop driving after 78 accident free years (She's 97 now and still lives alone). The horn does not work so my older sister informed me that it had gone off while parked and a gentlemen disabled it for her. She doesn't know how!!
First I wanted to see if the horn itself still worked so I simply ran a short wire from the battery positive terminal to the horn assembly wiring and the horn sounded. Secondly, I swapped out the horn relay in the maxifuse/relay panel but still no horn. I looked for a fuse under the dash on the driver's side and found none. Explored the wiring from the passenger side horn and found it ran into the passenger compartment on the right side. I removed the cover from the passenger foot area and found another fuse block. The owner's manual indicates (should have read the manual first) there is a fuse block there but indicates the need to "See your Dealer". Translates=$$$ I found the horn fuse(15Amp) and replaced it. Horn sounded immediately. Pulled the fuse and then started for the airbag/horn module. Removed the negative battery cable and then the positive cable. Turned the steering wheel to the 10:30 position (12:00 is straight ahead) so I could get to the two T25 torx head screws that hold the airbag/horn module in place. Slid the module aft and found 4 wire connections. One is a yellow modular connection with two heavier guage yellow wires attached. The second connector is a flat black connector with seven wires attached. Two white, two dark blue, two green, and one orange. The third connector is two red wires connected to a spring assembly that is held in by a white plastic 1/4" barrel with a little tit that holds it in when turned clockwise. The fourth connector is two black wires that are obviously a ground as they end at a spring clip that is inserted into a 1/4" hole drilled in the steering wheel. My question is what are the functions of these wires. I have made the assumption that the yellow wires are for the airbag, the seven wires are for the remote radio and temperature control buttons on the steering wheel as part of the airbag/horn assembly, the red wires are for the horn activation. But are the black wires solely for the horn circuit ground or do they serve another purpose?? My Chilton and Haynes manuals are really lacking as they are too general. Does anyone have wiring diagrams for this auto or can you steer me to a reliable on line site that may have them?

Before you rip into this, have you considered that the horn button(s) may be "stuck" in the steering wheel, or there's a short in the steering column? I would check these first before moving onto airbag interfaces.

Here is a schematic of the horn circuit, along with a link to an older thread on this subject. Click Here
Notice, the black wires going to the horn button are used to ground the horn relay which will sound the horns. When working around the air bag circuit, be sure to disconnect the negative (-) battery cable first, then the positive. Once both are removed, touch the positive & negative cables together to drain residual power. In addition, it is best to turn OFF the climate control (with engine running) before removing the battery cables. ![]()

Quote:
My '95 LeSabre has done exactly the same thing in cold weather. I disabled the horns until I had time to look into it. Diagnosis indicated that the contacts in the steering wheel sounder were closing due to shrinkage of the vinyl covering over the sounder and air bag. Against all sound advice I removed the air bag/horn sounder and massaged the vinyl cover enough to stretch the vinyl and release the contacts. That was two winters ago and it hasn't sounded the horn at 3:00 AM sitting in -25° weather yet (knock on wood). I would not advise doing this but would instead suggest you replace the air bag/sounder assembly. There is a risk of igniting the gas generator in the air bag assembly by doing this, and that can be extremely dangerous.

Re: 1995 LeSabre Limited horn wire description at air bag module
Solution;
I found that one side of the pad that actuates the horn was closed so I disconneted that side and left the other side connected. Reinstalled the fuse and now the horn works so I cvan pass the state safety inspection. |

Re: 1995 LeSabre Limited horn wire description at air bag module
You wouldn't pass in my state, both sides have to work.......but good diagnostics on finding your problem.....
That seems to be a problem on GM horn pads......they had a tsb out there, forgot what model/year, when on real cold nights, the contacts would contract and set the horn off...... In some setups, the switches are seperate from the pad, but most are integral to the pad(stupid design)..... |

Re: 1995 LeSabre Limited horn wire description at air bag module
Even if an auto part isn't working for you, it may be of some use to someone else. It takes time to track down someone that needs the part so the recycling center may be the perfect middleman for the job. You can drop off all of the parts that you are not using. Eventually, someone else may call up the facility and ask about that exact part.
Thanks.
