2006 Chevy cobalt

Hello, I have a 2006 Chevy cobalt. I will advise of full story from beginning to end so I can getget an accurate answer. I was driving and heard knocking noise for about two days. On the third day there was knocking and the car cut off. There was no smoke except when my husban took the gas cap off. It was little to none. Tried starting the car it just click didn't turn over. The starter is replaced, alternator replaced, battery charged for 24 hrs. Car wont start. Just clicks. Noticed security lock checked the manual tried the passlock 3 reset. Didn't work. Tried to turn car on, just clicks. No turnover.

When trying to start now, the security lock disappears. There are no lights on dashboard to show what the problem could be. Radio turns on, lights in and out car turns on. Pls help. My only form of transportation. Not a lot of money.

Re: 2006 Chevy cobalt

I'm a little concerned about the knocking noise. Is there oil in the engine? Maybe the engine siezed up? Smoke from the gas cap? Pull the spark plugs and use a socket and 1/2" ratchet or breaker bar on the crank pully bolt and try and turn the engine a full turn, both ways.

Oil at 100%. smoke came from oil section when he took cap off but nothing to panic about. Where is the crank pulley located please and thank you.

Re: 2006 Chevy cobalt

Crank pully (harmonic balancer) is the large pully on bottom of the engine.

Re: 2006 Chevy cobalt

You want to be able to crank the engine over 1 complete revolution, by hand, both directions. As stated in my first post.

Re: 2006 Chevy cobalt

The mechanic next door tried something by the front tires & a built bolt didn't move. He said engine blown. is that true?

Sounds like he did what I asked, and if the engine wont turn, It's siezed and needs replaced.

Re: 2006 Chevy cobalt

I would call any of the salvage yards in your area and see if they have one. The lower mileage engines will cost more than the higher mileage ones.

Re: 2006 Chevy cobalt

Ok. Is it the entire engine that needs to be replaced? I'm lost when it comes to this. & I don't want no-one ripping me off.

Re: 2006 Chevy cobalt

Yes, the whole thing. They will probably have a core charge on it so they will want the old one back.
